8:12 pm - Fruitcake
So we are drowning fruit in booze to make a fruit cake.

Specifically, in Laphroig because it's the crappiest scotch we've got.

Talk about first world problems. Smells like it's going to be a great cake though :)

8:24 pm - Obligatory Photo Post

Photos are links rather than inline because I couldn't be arsed resizing for you folks with slow net connections. Seriously, write to your federal MP and ask them when the NBN will be available in your area.

Renee bought a macro lens today so that she can take better pictures of archaeological artifacts. Of course, this meant that I had to experiment with it and make sure it worked properly this afternoon.

Getting used to the amazingly small depth of field will be hard.

2:36 pm - Midsummer 2009
Midsummer is the longest day of the year, and what better way to observe the passing of the year than with friends and family.

We'd like you to join us to celebrate Midsummer. There will be food, there will be music, there will be candles, and most importantly, there will be friends and family.

As actual midsummer falls on a Tuesday this year, we have selected the nearest Saturday.

When: 19th December, 2009, from 5pm.
Where: Nigel & Renee's house*.
BYO: drinks, food to share, candles, fire wood, wishes and dreams
We will provide music, BBQ, ice, tea lights and salad.
Please RSVP
*if you don't know our address, please email or phone us.

Candle ceremony will be at dusk, and we'll also have a separate table/altar/thing for extra wishes and for those who miss it.

1:23 pm - Climate Research Unit Email Scandal
While I don't deny that our climate is changing and that human activity will have some impact on that change, I do wonder at the science behind the conclusions that are being drawn, particularly given how rabid both sides of the debate seem to be.

This guy gives a good precis of the recent leaked email incident from a real scientist's point of view.

1:04 pm - Cars
Someone broke my car (and 4 others in the same incident).

Opinion of those around (police, tow truck driver etc) is that it's a write-off, which means I need to start thinking about what to replace it with. Renee needs a four-wheel drive of some sort for work, anyone have opinions of 4wd work vehicles?

current mood: insured

1:12 pm - GF(C) BBQ
So it's that time of year again. Spring is in the air and its time to launch BBQ season!

Jumble, Skitch, Twist, Bear & Tiggrr would like to invite you to a BBQ on Sunday the 27th of September. Yeah, I know we usually do this on grand final day - but we can pretend.

We will crank up the BBQ, crank up the stereo and enjoy the lovely melbourne weather in our backyard.

This year, we are also combining our BBQ with another cause, the Lort Smith Animal Hospital is asking people to 'Party for Strays' and raise money to support them and help them maintain their services to the community.

Jumble and Skitch both believe this a good idea (they also think buckets of cat food is a good idea), and so if you would like to donate money to Lort Smith, you can either do it via this website:

http://www.partyforstrays.com/index.php?action=ivotes&form_name=view&id=1153

Or via a donation tin we will have on the table on the day.
Of course, if you don't feel like donating, that is cool too and we'd still love your company on the day.

When: 1pm-6pm Sunday 27th September
Where: Our place. If you don't know where it is, ask. :)
BYO: Something to BBQ and drink, we will provide the usual range of salads, bread etc.
Please RSVP: Because otherwise we might run out of potato salad, and that would be saddenating.

Feel free to pass this invitation onto friends who might miss it or people you think we'd like to meet, but also please let us know you have done so.

House rules: Don't be a cupcake.

10:08 am - Midsummer
Join us for all the light, laughter and friendship as we celebrate the longest day of the year, with food, candle light and friends. Complete with Russian gymnasts.

When: Saturday 20th December, 6pm start
Where: 336 Brunswick Road, Brunswick
Bring: Yourself, something to drink, something to entertain, wishes, glass containers for candles and if you feel like it we will probably fire up the BBQ, so you might want something to BBQ. Firewood is also always welcome.
RSVP: Please do.

Note: actual Midsummer is about 12.04am on the 21st of December. So we might hold off the candle ceremony until close to midnight.

If you want to invite friends we don't know, or don't know that well, new faces are pretty much always welcome but do ask us first please.

We will probably have a dj booth set up in the beer fridge room, DJ type friends are encouraged to bring CD's and play a set.

9:51 am - Movember
During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I'm growing a Mo. For several reasons: firstly, it's raising money for things that I think are important and secondly, it's a fun gimmick.

The important thing is that it's raising money for prostate cancer research and the "beyondblue" depression initiative. Statisticians say that one man in six is affected to some extent by clinical depression -- i.e. brain juice problems rather than just "harden the fuck up". I haven't got the stats for it but I'm willing to bet that most of them never seek proper treatment.

As for prostate cancer research - aside from letting us live longer and less painful lives and all the good things that come out of microbiology as side-effects of cancer research, I fully support anything that should eventually result in someone not sticking their finger up my bum.

If you want more info on where the money goes, check out http://www.movember.com.au/

To donate to my Mo you can either:

Click this link https://www.movember.com/au/donate/donate-details.php?action=sponsorlink®o=2007661&country=au and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account, or
Write a cheque payable to ‘Movember Foundation', referencing my Registration Number 2007661 and mailing it to:
Movember Foundation
PO Box 292
Prahran VIC 3181

Remember, all donations over $2 are tax deductible.

1:30 pm - Grand Final BBQ
Bear and Tiggrr invite you to join us for our Grand Final BBQ!

No, it's not the last BBQ we will ever have, nor will it be rather grand I suspect.

But that weird footy thing, the grand final is the 27th of September.

So join us for a casual afternoon BBQ in the back yard and happily ignore the Football. Though we'll put it on in the telly room for the junkies.

So our place from 12pm, Saturday 27th of September, to about 6pm.
There are other parties happening that evening, so don't be offended if we kick you out so we can go to them. :P

Bring some dead animal to BBQ, and some booze to drink.
We'll provide some salad, bread, sauce and some funky music.

Please RSVP
